A Memoir of My Marriage.”.

In August 2004, Governor James E. McGreevey of New Jersey made history when he declared “My truth is that I am a gay American” and announced his resignation.

Now, in this extraordinarily candid memoir, McGreevey shares his story of a life of ambition, moral compromise, and redemption.

From childhood, McGreevey lived an idealized American life, and he strove to exceed expectations in everything he did.

He won three elections by age thirty-six, and four years later nearly toppled the state's popular governor, Christie Todd Whitman.

When he ran again, in 2001, he won by a landslide.

Throughout his adult life McGreevey had been forced to suppress a fundamental truth: that he was gay.

He knew that the only clear path to his dreams was to live a straight life, and so he split in two, accepting the traditional role of family man while denying his deepest emotions.

And he discovered that becoming a political player demanded ethical shortcuts at least as corrosive as living in the closet.

Written with honesty, grace, and rare insight, The Confession may be among the most honest political memoirs ever written.

James E. McGreevey was the governor of New Jersey from January 2002 to November 2004.

Born in Jersey City, he earned degrees from Columbia, Georgetown, and Harvard before serving three terms as the mayor of Woodbridge, New Jersey.

After a narrow defeat in 1997, he was elected to the governor's seat in 2001.

He lives in Plainfield, New Jersey with his partner, Mark O'Donnell.

He has two daughters, Jacqueline and Morag.

In August 2004, New Jersey Governor Jim McGreevey resigned, shocking the nation with the news that he was a gay American.

Dina Matos McGreevey stood silently beside him, the picture of the faithful wife standing by her man.

She has endured much speculation since then, nevertheless she has remained silent.

Until now.

Speaking up at last, Dina Matos McGreevey tells her story with scalding honesty.

A tale of love, betrayal, scandal, and hope, Silent Partner is above all a story of survival.

1) Mrs. McGreevey Does Oprah, Kept Sleeping With "Gay American" Hubby.

Dina Matos McGreevey's unhappy tale; and the former First Couple of New Jersey back when they were clueless and, er, happy?

There’s no way this whole Jim McGreevey vs. Dina Matos McGreevey divorce/custody battle mess can be done nicely. This past week Mrs. McG has claimed that the former NJ Gov has nudie male art posters in his bedroom, and that that is a bad thing. And Mr. McG claimed his wife knew he was gay and married him anyway. And they both have books out about it. Urf...

Today, the NY Post says that while taping an appearance on Oprah, Dina Matos McGreevey (who’s on the show plugging her book, Silent Partner) explains that even after McGreevey made his “I am a gay American” speech and came out, the couple shared a bed for months. And weirdly, she seems put off that he wasn’t frisky in the sack anymore? Ummm... Wha?

2) McG'S Gay Poster Boy.

April 22, 2007 -- This is the full-frontal nude photograph that hung in the bedroom of New Jersey's disgraced love gov, Jim McGreevey, when his 5-year-old daughter came for sleepovers - and the source of his estranged wife's claims that he's an unfit parent.

The 50-by-60-inch print in the master bedroom of the Plainfield, N.J., home of McGreevey and partner Mark O'Donnell is part of a series called "Naked Gay Friends" by Manhattan photographer Richard Renaldi, and was featured in Blue, a gay men's magazine.

According to Renaldi, 38, and the Yossi Milo Gallery, which sells his work, O'Donnell purchased the print for $3,000 in 2004.

The shot was taken in 2000, on the shores of Lake Michigan, where Renaldi was vacationing with his partner of nine years, Seth Boyd.

"[Seth] had just gotten out of the water. It's a lovely portrait," Renaldi told The Post.

Last week, McGreevey's estranged wife, Dina Matos McGreevey, filed a motion seeking full custody of their daughter, Jacqueline. Her argument took specific issue with the "life-size photograph of a nude model" hanging in the bedroom.

The suit questioned whether it "was appropriate for his 'little girl' - to use his description of our child - to be viewing the photograph in question."

She also asked that Jacqueline be forbidden to share a bed with her dad and his boyfriend during sleepovers.

"It is one thing for children to sleep with a parent or parents," she said in a written response to McGreevey's divorce filing. "It is quite another for children to sleep with a parent and a third party."

The former governor, who has filed for joint custody of Jacqueline, claims in court papers that his wife has "seemingly irrational fears" about his sexuality.

Matos McGreevey - whose tell-all book about being a gay man's wife, "Silent Partner," comes out on May 1 - has blasted back at McGreevey's "insinuations" that she's homophobic.

McGreevey said last week he has taken down the photograph and that his daughter does not sleep in bed with him and his partner.

Renaldi believes Mrs. McGreevey's stance "is an overreaction." "It's a very natural portrait of a young man who happens to be naked. It's a piece of art, no different than a sculpture you would see of a naked man," he said.

O'Donnell, an Australian money manager and millionaire art collector, owns two other Renaldi prints, both images of bull riders in a series on the West, the photographer said. Said Renaldi of the cowboys: "No, no they're not naked."

3) McGreevey Disputes Ex's Claim, Says She Knew He Was Gay All Along.

Posted: April 24, 2007 - 8:00 am ET

(Trenton, New Jersey) The estranged wife of former New Jersey Gov. James E. McGreevey knew he was gay before they married, he claimed in court papers filed Monday.

McGreevey wrote that Dina Matos McGreevy "knew of my sexual orientation before our marriage, she chose to either ignore it or block it out of her mind, even when questioned by her friends."

The former governor doesn't detail how she knew he was gay, but objects to his wife's contention in recent court papers that he is bisexual.

"On the offhand chance she wasn't paying attention, I AM A GAY AMERICAN," he wrote, referencing the term he used to describe himself when he announced his resignation in August 2004. "She is in deep denial."

An after-hours telephone message left at Matos McGreevey's workplace was not immediately returned Monday. Her lawyer, John Post, did not immediately respond to an e-mail message seeking comment.

McGreevey resigned after saying he was gay and had an extramarital affair.

The former governor also defended his parenting skills in the filing. He said despite the demands of being governor he was never "indifferent" to their 5-year-old daughter, as his estranged wife claims.

Last week, Matos McGreevey claimed in court papers that he exposed their young daughter to erotic artwork at the home he now shares with partner Mark O'Donnell, an Australian money manager. She is seeking primary custody.

McGreevey, 49, countered in Monday's filing that his wife "Has never seen the photograph" of the nude male model.

Matos McGreevey's memoir is scheduled to reach bookstores May.

Gay gov cold after he came out: wife.

Sex Change: Dina McGreevey says she and Jim had "normal sex" before his "I'm gay" speech.

April 26, 2007 -- CHICAGO - Jim McGreevey's estranged wife revealed yesterday that she shared a cold bed with her husband for three months following the former New Jersey governor's bombshell announcement that he was "a gay American."

Dina Matos McGreevey said in a taping of an interview with Oprah Winfrey that she felt "shocked" at learning of her husband's true sexuality, but stayed with him at first because she didn't know what else to do.

"I had no home. I had nowhere to go," she told Winfrey, according to members of the studio audience. "I thought he'd get up and leave, but he didn't."

Matos McGreevey, who appeared stoic and composed, insisted she never knew her husband was gay until hours before his stunning announcement, despite reports and allegations in divorce papers from her husband that she had known for years.

"I never knew," she told Winfrey.

Matos McGreevey said she and her husband had had "normal sex" over the years and she became aware that he was involved in some sort of a scandal three days before his bombshell announcement and "would resign" as governor but did not know why.

It was only two hours before he made his stunning speech on Aug. 13, 2004, that he told his wife.

Winfrey then quoted a passage from Matos McGreevey's upcoming book in which she recalled her husband "asked me to act like Jackie Kennedy," which elicited peals of laughter from the audience.

"That's ridiculous," Winfrey quipped.

After being told, Matos McGreevey said "the shock was overwhelming" and that she "knew it was over," but she wasn't sure what to do next.

When asked if she thought at the time there was any hope for the relationship or the possibility of "regaining trust," Matos McGreevey said, "No, not at all."

"He never truly apologized to me," she said.

The McGreeveys have been engaged in a brutal divorce battle and custody battle for their 5-year-old daughter, Jacqueline. Details emerged recently of a large nude photo Jim McGreevey had hanging in the love nest he keeps with his new boyfriend, which Dina called "inappropriate."

"I didn't like the picture," she said. "It is totally inappropriate for my daughter."

At the end of the interview, Winfrey read a statement from Jim McGreevey in which he wished his former wife happiness and said he was glad she had an opportunity to tell her side, as Dina listened stone-fac
